Well, this one of the few times that I will not post my thoughts about the Detroit Lions, but instead this will be about next Tuesday’s Presidential Election.
I am glad that this is almost over, it seems that this Election has been running forever and it can’t end soon enough. Going into the both the Democratic and Republican Primaries, I thought the 2 candidates that would be left standing were Hillary Clinton, and Rudy Guiliani but I was wrong. I was very intrigued throughout the Democratic Race between Senator Barack Obama, and Senator Hillary Clinton. They were like 2 fighters throwing their best punch at each other with neither of them going down for the count, but in June Clinton finally threw in the towel. Throughout the bitter fight many pundits wondered if there would be a split Democratic Convention between the Obama supporters and the Clinton supporters, but to the dismay of the Republicans, nothing happened.
John McCain on the other hand, had a different road to be the Republican nominee. Late in 2007, his campaign was given up for dead before the year even started. I thought he would close shop and call it a day but he didn’t. After placing 4th in the Iowa Caucus, McCain went on to New Hampshire and placed 1st and gave new life to his Campaign. He eventually had to fend off both former Governor Mitt Romney, and former Governor Mike Huckabee and in early March, he went over the top to win the Republican Nomination.
After an rousing conclusion of the Democratic National Convention, Obama’s Campaign was looking for a significant bounce to propel him into a big lead against McCain, but something funny happened the next day.
In a bit of surprise, John McCain named Alaska Governor Sarah Palin as his running mate. WHO?!?! That’s what most of America was saying. Here was this woman, in her early to mid-40’s a self described Hockey Mom who was definitely not a Washington insider, suddenly thrust into the white hot spotlight of a Presidential Campaign race. One of the many purposes behind her selection was to appeal to the many women voters who would have supported Hillary Clinton, had Clinton been the nominee. After her selection and a very highly rated appearance at the Republican National Convention, some polls had McCain either behind a point, tied, or with a slight lead against Obama.
As both candidates were attacking each other and fighting over key issues, something happened in September to which I think will ultimately be John McCain’s undoing, the steep dive of the Stock Market. What seemed to be of a close fight between both Candidates now has John McCain against the ropes unable to defend the onslaught of punches thrown by Obama. McCain can try all he want to throw counters, William Ayers, Abortion, Redistribution of Wealth a.k.a (Joe the Plumber), but none of it will affect Obama.
In my opinion, the Election will be decided before 10:00pm next Tuesday with an Obama landside victory. The Republicans will have to lick their wounds and see if they can put a dent in both the Senate and the House in the 2010 mid-term elections and then come with a more formidable nominee in 2012.
