1 Week Away

Monday, October 27th, 2008

Well, this one of the few times that I will not post my thoughts about the Detroit Lions, but instead this will be about next Tuesday’s Presidential Election.

I am glad that this is almost over, it seems that this Election has been running forever and it can’t end soon enough.  Going into the both the Democratic and Republican Primaries, I thought the 2 candidates that would be left standing were Hillary Clinton, and Rudy Guiliani but I was wrong.  I was very intrigued throughout the Democratic Race between Senator Barack Obama, and Senator Hillary Clinton. They were like 2 fighters throwing their best punch at each other with neither of them going down for the count, but in June Clinton finally threw in the towel.  Throughout the bitter fight many pundits wondered if there would be a split Democratic Convention between the Obama supporters and the Clinton supporters, but to the dismay of the Republicans, nothing happened.

John McCain on the other hand, had a different road to be the Republican nominee.  Late in 2007, his campaign was given up for dead before the year even started.  I thought he would close shop and call it a day but he didn’t.  After placing 4th in the Iowa Caucus, McCain went on to New Hampshire and placed 1st and gave new life to his Campaign.  He eventually had to fend off both former Governor Mitt Romney, and former Governor Mike Huckabee and in early March, he went over the top to win the Republican Nomination.

After an rousing conclusion of the Democratic National Convention, Obama’s Campaign was looking for a significant bounce to propel him into a big lead against McCain, but something funny happened the next day.

In a bit of surprise, John McCain named Alaska Governor Sarah Palin as his running mate.  WHO?!?!  That’s what most of America was saying. Here was this woman, in her early to mid-40’s a self described Hockey Mom who was definitely not a Washington insider, suddenly thrust into the white hot spotlight of a Presidential Campaign race.  One of the many purposes behind her selection was to appeal to the many women voters who would have supported Hillary Clinton, had Clinton been the nominee.  After her selection and a very highly rated appearance at the Republican National Convention, some polls had McCain either behind a point, tied, or with a slight lead against Obama.

As both candidates were attacking each other and fighting over key issues, something happened in September to which I think will ultimately be John McCain’s undoing, the steep dive of the Stock Market.  What seemed to be of a close fight between both Candidates now has John McCain against the ropes unable to defend the onslaught of punches thrown by Obama.  McCain can try all he want to throw counters, William Ayers, Abortion, Redistribution of Wealth a.k.a (Joe the Plumber), but none of it will affect Obama.

In my opinion, the Election will be decided before 10:00pm next Tuesday with an Obama landside victory.  The Republicans will have to lick their wounds and see if they can put a dent in both the Senate and the House in the 2010 mid-term elections and then come with a more formidable nominee in 2012.

They are Almost Halfway There (Redskins 25 – Lions 17)

Is That All?:

I am going to keep this short because I couldn’t see the game in my area because of the blackout, (lucky me).  The Lions lose again, but they did manage to score their first touchdown in the 1st Quarter this season.  They are 0-7 and play at Chicago on Sunday.

That just about all I have to say about this game.

Redskins vs. Lions (Week 8) 1:00pm

Wednesday, October 22nd, 2008

The Washington Redskins come to town to play the Detroit Lions.  The Redskins come in with a surprising record of 5-2 which is second best in the tough NFC East.  They are led by the NFL’s overall leading rusher, (yards wise) Clinton Portis and 3rd year starter at Quarterback, Jason Campbell.  Look for Clinton Portis to have a pretty good day against the Lions defense and the Redskins jump out to an early lead just like the majority of the Lions opponents have done this season.

Quit Digging Yoursleves a Hole! (Lions 21 – Texans 28)

Put the Shovel Down and Step Away Slowly:

For what seems like the 5th time this season, the Lions put themselves in a 21-point hole before the end of the first half.  They might as well spot the Redskins 21 points before kickoff because sooner or later, the ‘Skins will be ahead 21-0 sometime in the first half.  Ladies and Gentlemen, the Tampa Cover 2.

Give Him the Dang Ball!:

Yes, I am talking about Calvin Johnson.  A receiver with his size and speed should be touching the ball more than 4 times.  There were numerous times during the game that even the announcers were saying that Orlovsky should be throwing more to Calvin Johnson.  The guy can be a very effective playmaker when thrown to case in point, the 96 yard touchdown pass.

Big Deal:

There are reports going on about Brett Favre giving pointers to Lions on how to beat the Packers before their week 2 game.  Yes he probably has an ax to grind but still, if even if the Lions knew every playcall that the Packers would run for that game, they still would have gotten beat.  They are the Lions aren’t day?
